A devastating house fire in Talisay City, Cebu, has claimed the lives of a 71-year-old grandmother and her faithful dog, who remained by her side until the very end. The tragic incident occurred around 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 26, 2026, in Sitio Alegre, Barangay Bulacao, leaving a community in mourning and highlighting an extraordinary tale of loyalty.
Victim Identified as Paralyzed Elderly Woman
The deceased has been identified as Rebecca Bacalan, a 71-year-old resident who was unable to escape the blaze due to paralysis from a mild stroke she suffered the previous year. According to her granddaughter, Genevieve Navarro, Bacalan was at home with her grandson's boyfriend at the time of the fire. Despite attempts to rescue her, she refused to be carried out of the burning house.
Heartbreaking Account from Family Member
Genevieve Navarro shared emotional details, stating, "He tried to lift her, ma'am, but she absolutely refused to be moved. Even when rescue teams arrived, she would not allow anyone to take her out." This refusal ultimately led to her tragic demise, as the flames quickly engulfed the structure.
Loyal Dog Chooses to Stay with Owner
In a poignant twist, Bacalan's pet dog, named Bok, an Aspin breed aged six to seven years, also perished in the fire. The dog was found under the bed with its owner, having chosen not to abandon her. Navarro explained that Bok was accustomed to sleeping either beside Bacalan or under her bed, and despite having the ability to flee, the loyal companion stayed put.
"Bok could have easily run away, ma'am, but he never left our grandmother," Navarro added, underscoring the deep bond between the pair. This act of devotion has touched many in the community, turning the tragedy into a story of unwavering loyalty.
Fire Investigation and Community Impact
Initial investigations by the Talisay City Fire Station suggest the fire originated from the vacant home of Henry Mabalcon, where lights were reportedly left on. The blaze rapidly spread, causing extensive damage to the neighborhood.
Barangay Bulacao Kapitan Banjo Abastillas reported that 31 houses were completely destroyed, displacing 135 individuals. The affected residents have been temporarily relocated to Bulacao National High School, where they are receiving aid and support from local authorities.
Community Rallies Amidst Loss
As fire crews work to assess the full extent of the damage, the community is coming together to assist those who lost their homes. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of house fires and the importance of fire safety measures, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly.
The story of Rebecca Bacalan and her dog Bok has resonated widely, with many expressing sorrow over their deaths but admiration for the canine's loyalty. It highlights how pets can become integral parts of families, offering comfort and companionship even in the face of peril.
