The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council-Davao Region (RDRRMC-Davao) reported that the number of casualties in the region following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake has increased to four. In an update as of 1 p.m. on June 8, RDRRMC-Davao confirmed an additional fatality in Digos City.
Initial Casualty Reports
The three initial deaths were recorded in Balut Island: one in Barangay Mabila due to a collapsed business establishment, one in Barangay Patuco from a landslide along with five injuries, and one in Barangay Konel due to a damaged mosque.
Injuries and Displacement
The council reported 23 injuries and no missing individuals. A total of 2,236 families, or 8,593 people, from 19 barangays were affected, with 1,704 families currently in evacuation areas.
Infrastructure Damage
Twelve infrastructures were damaged: six in Davao City, two in Davao del Sur, and four in Davao Occidental. The earthquake also affected a road, two bridges, two seaports, and caused power interruptions in six areas.
Government Response
Following the quake, 38 local government units suspended work and classes to ensure safety, considering possible aftershocks. RDRRMC is coordinating with LGUs, which have raised their disaster response offices to Blue Alert Status and activated response clusters. Advisories and early warning messages have been disseminated to all schools.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck offshore Maasim, Sarangani, at 7:37 a.m. on June 8, 2026, and was felt in parts of Mindanao. Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning after the quake.
