13 More Families Relocate to Pasilong sa Paradise After Typhoon Tino
More Typhoon-Hit Families Move to Mandaue Transitory Housing

Mandaue City has taken a significant step in its recovery efforts from Typhoon Tino, moving an additional 13 displaced families into the Pasilong sa Paradise transitory housing site located in Barangay Guizo. This relocation is part of the city's ongoing mission to provide more stable and dignified shelter for those affected by the recent calamity.

Mayor Ouano's Update on Relocation Efforts

Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano explained that the primary goal is to transition residents out of crowded evacuation centers. He acknowledged a delay in the process, which was initially planned for late December. Electricity issues at the Pasilong sa Paradise site were the cause of the postponement.

"We really tried to relocate them before Christmas or before New Year, but because of electricity issues, it did not happen. Now we have found a solution," Mayor Ouano stated. With the problem resolved, the city has successfully relocated 17 families from Barangay Tipolo, along with families from Barangays Alang-Alang and Umapad.

Assessing Need and Expanding Capacity

The city has identified a significant number of individuals still in need of housing. According to Mayor Ouano, 198 people have expressed their willingness to move into the transitory site. This group includes families who have been staying with relatives or in rented accommodations after their homes were destroyed.

"These families were found and are willing to move here, but the City Social Welfare and Services will re-evaluate if their homes were truly totally washed out," the Mayor clarified, ensuring aid reaches those most in need.

Currently, 50 housing units are available at Pasilong sa Paradise. The site's capacity is set to grow substantially after a visit from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Monday, January 5, 2026. The DSWD committed to providing an additional 100 units, bringing the total to 150. The long-term target for the site is 200 units.

Gratitude and Future Permanent Housing

Mayor Ouano expressed profound gratitude to the National Government for selecting Mandaue City as a pilot site for this housing initiative. "We are very grateful to the National Government for choosing Mandaue City as a pilot site. What they have done here is very good. The housing is dignified, presentable and you can see that the evacuees are happy," he said.

He also emphasized that the Pasilong sa Paradise units are a temporary solution. As part of the city's long-term relocation plan, families will eventually be transferred to a permanent socialized housing project in Pajara. This phased approach ensures immediate shelter needs are met while working towards a more stable future for all displaced residents.
