Coast Guard Rescues Survivor, Searches for 14 Missing from Motorbanca in Davao
Search for 14 Missing After Motorbanca Disappears in Davao

The Philippine Coast Guard has launched a major search and rescue operation in the waters of Southeastern Mindanao after a motorbanca went missing with 15 people on board. The operation yielded its first success on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, with the rescue of one survivor.

Details of the Missing Vessel and Rescue

The motor banca, identified as MBCA Amejara, was reported missing on the afternoon of January 19, 2026. It had departed from Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao City at approximately 8 a.m. on January 17, bound for Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental. The vessel failed to arrive as scheduled on January 19.

Authorities from the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) confirmed that the banca was last sighted in the waters off Sarangani, Davao Occidental. It was carrying a total of 15 individuals: 11 passengers and 4 crew members.

In a significant development, one crew member, Christopher Bulis, was successfully rescued on January 20. He was found in the waters off Barangay Laker, Sarangani, and later brought to Jose Abad Santos (JAS) in Davao Occidental for medical attention.

Ongoing Search and Investigation

A coordinated search effort is now underway, involving multiple agencies including the Philippine Navy, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), and local disaster offices. CGDSEM Commander Commodore Philipps Y. Soria assured the public that efforts are being intensified to locate the remaining 14 individuals.

The investigation has revealed a critical lapse in procedure. The MBCA Amejara allegedly continued its voyage without securing the proper clearance from the Coast Guard. Furthermore, the vessel had previously been prevented from sailing due to the absence of a required permit from the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA).

Authorities are reviewing the sea and weather conditions at the time of the voyage as part of their probe. Relatives of all those on board have been notified of the situation.

Coast Guard Advisory and Safety Reminder

The CGDSEM has issued a maritime advisory urging all vessels and fisherfolk in the Davao Gulf area to maintain a vigilant lookout. The specific areas of interest include:

  • Malita, Sta. Maria, and Don Marcelino
  • Balut Island and Sarangani Island
  • Jose Abad Santos and North Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental
  • Governor Generoso in Davao Oriental

Mariners who spot the missing white and blue motorbanca or any related debris are asked to provide assistance if possible and immediately report to the nearest Coast Guard station.

In a stern reminder, the Coast Guard emphasized that maritime safety regulations are in place to prevent such tragedies. The agency advised the public to avoid sea travel when waves are high and weather conditions are unfavorable to prevent risking lives.

The names of the individuals still missing are: Patrocinio Genita III (boat master), Christian Genita, Homer Bolasa, Lanorias Porferio Jr., John Julius Alcain, Jessie Tan, Jaime Tan, Steven Tan, Hector Emberga, Eariano Uyking, Anton Banzali, Levi Lao, Herwin Tan, and Ace Cortez.
