Young Hero Emerges from Typhoon Tino Tragedy

In the midst of the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) in Cebu, a remarkable story of courage and selflessness has emerged from the town of Liloan. Jayboy Magdadaro, a 15-year-old grade 9 student at Jubay Integrated School, became an unexpected hero during the November 4, 2025 calamity by saving approximately 50 people from drowning in treacherous floodwaters.

Day-Long Rescue Mission

As floodwaters rapidly rose throughout Liloan, Magdadaro braved strong winds and dangerous currents to rescue stranded community members. Using a small boat and a salbabida (lifebuoy), the teenager worked tirelessly from morning until dusk, repeatedly venturing into the floodwaters to transport people to safety.

His rescue efforts focused on the most vulnerable members of his community: children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals who were trapped by the rising waters. Despite the perilous conditions, Magdadaro continued his mission without stopping to eat, demonstrating extraordinary dedication to helping others.

A Mother's Pride and Concern

Alma Magdadaro, Jayboy's mother, expressed both overwhelming pride and natural concern for her son during an interview on November 11, 2025. Speaking in Cebuano, she revealed that Jayboy had always been helpful, often assisting elderly neighbors in their daily activities.

"We had assessed the situation during the rising floodwaters and didn't anticipate he would rescue anyone," Alma shared. "I was concerned for his safety, but Jayboy remained determined to assist those stranded."

The physical toll of the rescue became apparent the following day when Jayboy developed a fever, likely due to exhaustion and exposure to the elements during his day-long rescue operation.

Community Recognition and Future Dreams

Jayboy's heroic actions have not gone unnoticed by his community and local officials. On November 11, two significant recognitions were granted to the young hero:

  • Mabolo Barangay Captain Atty. Daniel Francis Arguedo provided a full scholarship covering all school fees plus a monthly allowance of P3,000
  • The municipality of Liloan also extended a full scholarship for Jayboy's chosen course

The youngest of five siblings, Jayboy has been active in his community as a youth volunteer with the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) even before the typhoon. He plans to pursue a degree in criminology to continue his mission of serving and helping people.

Jayboy's story stands in stark contrast to the tragic reality faced by Liloan, which reported 35 fatalities - the highest death toll in Cebu Province from Typhoon Tino. His actions have made him a symbol of courage and hope, demonstrating that even in the darkest times brought by disaster, the human spirit can shine brightly.
