Three Siblings Sustain Burns in Cebu City Fire, Investigation Underway
In a distressing incident, three minor siblings sustained first-degree burns after a fire erupted in Sityo Mahayahay, Barangay Apas, Cebu City, at 11:43 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. The victims, identified as Russel, 17; Ransel, 15; and Robby Matugas, 14, suffered burns on their faces and arms but are now reported to be in stable condition.
Fire Details and Response
According to an investigator from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), it is believed that the siblings were asleep when the fire broke out. At the time, their mother was not at home as she was working as a gasoline attendant. The BFP investigator stated, "Minor injuries only. Since it happened at night, it's possible the children were already asleep because the parent was away due to work." The fire was classified as a first alarm due to the area's inaccessibility and its location on a hillside.
The blaze was brought under control by midnight and fully extinguished within 10 minutes. Based on the investigation, the fire originated in a house owned by a person named "Rosa," constructed from light materials, which allowed it to spread quickly to an adjacent house.
Impact and Aftermath
The fire affected two houses, with one completely destroyed and the other partially burned. Two families, comprising six individuals in total, were impacted, with estimated damages reaching P24,000. Currently, the victims are being accommodated at the barangay hall as authorities continue their assessment and support efforts.
This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in fire safety, particularly in densely populated and hard-to-reach areas. The BFP is urging residents to ensure proper fire prevention measures, especially in homes built with flammable materials.
