Cebu Volunteer Dies After Binaliw Landfill Rescue, Diabetes Complicates Infection
Volunteer Dies After Binaliw Landfill Rescue Operation

A 50-year-old volunteer responder from Toledo City has tragically passed away following his duties in a search and rescue operation at the Binaliw landfill in Cebu. The announcement was made by Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, chairman of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO), on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Service Turns Fatal Due to Infection

The volunteer, who was employed as a security guard at a mining company in Toledo, served from January 10 to January 13, 2026. According to reports, he later succumbed to a severe infection in the hospital. Councilor Tumulak relayed the account from the victim's daughter, stating that her father complained of pain in his left calf caused by his boots during the operation.

The ill-fitting footwear reportedly caused large blisters on his leg, which then led to a serious infection. His condition rapidly deteriorated, prompting his admission to a hospital in Cebu City. A pre-existing Type 2 diabetes diagnosis critically worsened the medical complication, making it impossible for his body to fight the infection effectively.

City Government Extends Assistance

In the wake of this unfortunate incident, the Cebu City Government has committed to providing financial assistance to the bereaved family. This move aims to support them during this difficult time following the loss of a family member who dedicated his efforts to a critical community service.

The death highlights the physical risks and challenges faced by volunteer responders, especially those with underlying health conditions, during demanding operations like those conducted at the Binaliw landfill. The community and local officials are mourning the loss of a committed individual who answered the call to serve.
