Davao CDRRMO Orders Barangays to Monitor Rivers, Coasts

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) has instructed Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Councils (BDRRMCs) to maintain vigilant monitoring of rivers and coastal areas in response to abrupt weather changes.

Constant Reminder for Barangays

CDRRMO head Alfredo Baloran emphasized the importance of continuous observation. "It is our constant reminder to our barangays through our BDRRMCs to always monitor the rivers, especially if there is heavy rainfall in the upstream," Baloran stated. He explained that heavy rainfall can lead to the accumulation of water in tributaries, which may not be immediately noticed.

Risk of Flash Floods

Baloran warned that such embankments pose significant danger. "These embankments can be dangerous; once they break, a huge volume of water may cause flash floods," he said. The CDRRMO stressed that timely monitoring is crucial to prevent disasters.

Warning for Swimmers

Beyond rivers, the CDRRMO also cautioned individuals swimming along the Coastal Road. Baloran noted that the area is hazardous due to the high likelihood of large waves and the presence of tetropods—wave-dissipating concrete blocks that can injure swimmers. "We always remind those swimming in rivers and also in the coastal waters to stay safe and alert," he added.

Heat Index Advisory

Baloran further urged Dabawenyos to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and use sun protection as the daytime heat index reaches around 40 degrees Celsius during peak hours.
