FDC Misamis Power Corporation Strengthens Environmental Commitment Through Carbon Mapping Initiative
Filinvest Group's FDC Misamis Power Corporation (FDC Misamis) is significantly enhancing its environmental stewardship through comprehensive carbon mapping and accounting initiatives across its reforestation and protection sites in Barangay Sambulawan, El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental. This ambitious project aims to thoroughly understand how the company's reforested areas and adjacent protected forestlands contribute meaningfully to climate action efforts.
Establishing Data-Driven Baselines for Carbon Stocks
The primary objective of this initiative is to establish a clear, scientifically rigorous baseline of carbon stocks throughout the entire project site. This data-driven approach will facilitate informed planning and enable long-term, sustainable forest management strategies. "Protecting and restoring natural ecosystems requires more than good intentions. It necessitates clear data and a long-term perspective," emphasized Juan Eugenio L. Roxas, President and CEO of FDC Misamis Power Corporation.
Roxas further explained, "This project strengthens our understanding of how our reforestation efforts support climate resilience and environmental sustainability, helping ensure that our actions deliver lasting value for both the environment and local communities."
Partnerships and Program Scope
Launched in 2018 through strategic partnerships with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 10 and the local government of El Salvador City, FDC Misamis' Carbon Sink Management Program encompasses an extensive 216-hectare area. Approximately 150 hectares of this land have already undergone successful reforestation efforts, demonstrating the company's ongoing commitment to ecological restoration.
Scientific Methodology and Current Progress
With technical assistance from Central Mindanao University (CMU), the baselining activity specifically seeks to:
- Quantify potential carbon sequestration capabilities
- Develop sophisticated Geographic Information Systems (GIS)-based maps illustrating carbon distribution in forest biomass and soil
- Create assessment tools to monitor the protected area's condition over extended timeframes
During the first quarter of 2026, the project team achieved significant milestones including:
- Comprehensive geotagging and boundary surveys
- Initiation of field activities for carbon stock assessment
- Establishment of sampling plots across the project area
- Collection of tree measurements, understory samples, litter specimens, and soil samples for laboratory analysis
- Completion of initial GIS-based maps detailing project location, boundaries, and sampling plots
Future Phases and Long-Term Objectives
The project's next phase will concentrate on several critical activities:
- Establishing additional sampling plots for more comprehensive data collection
- Completing detailed laboratory analysis of collected samples
- Advancing GIS mapping capabilities and accuracy
- Conducting technical briefings and capability-building activities for selected FDC Misamis personnel
These initiatives collectively affirm FDC Misamis' steadfast commitment to employing scientific data, fostering strategic partnerships, and implementing responsible land management practices to guide its sustainability programs. The company aims to contribute significantly to locally rooted climate solutions that benefit both the environment and surrounding communities in Misamis Oriental.
