Lapu-Lapu City Cleans Up Coastlines for ASEAN Summit

In a significant environmental initiative, Lapu-Lapu City has launched a comprehensive coastal cleanup campaign in preparation for the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Summit 2026. The effort, which began in the second week of April, has already yielded impressive results, with authorities collecting 42 sacks of garbage weighing over 268 kilograms during the first of four scheduled cleanup weeks.

Targeted Coastal Areas for Cleanup

The cleanup campaign is strategically focused on four major coastal sites within Lapu-Lapu City: Angasil Port, Hilton Port, Buyong-Maribago Port, and Marigondon Beach. These locations were selected due to their visibility and importance as potential points of interest for summit attendees, ensuring they are pristine and welcoming for international delegates.

Government Commitment to a Successful Summit

Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan emphasized in a statement that this initiative is part of a broader city government campaign to ensure Lapu-Lapu is clean, orderly, and fully prepared to host delegates from various nations. She highlighted that the cleanup not only aims to facilitate a successful summit but also underscores the city’s dedication to protecting marine ecosystems and maintaining environmental sustainability.
