Cebu City is set to launch an environmental initiative aimed at making public spaces greener and more resilient to climate change through the planting of Narra trees, following the unanimous approval of a city council resolution.
Coordinated Long-Term Program
The measure, authored by Councilor Alvin Arcilla, calls for a coordinated long-term program that integrates flood mitigation, environmental protection, urban beautification, and tourism development through large-scale Narra tree planting across the city.
This move comes amid recurring flooding in Cebu City whenever heavy rains occur, continuously straining drainage systems and requiring repeated clearing operations and maintenance work in affected areas.
Climate Adaptation Strategy
The resolution views urban greening, especially through a well-planned tree planting program, as a key component of a broader climate adaptation approach.
At the center of the proposal is the Narra tree, the national tree of the Philippines, which the resolution describes as a tree species underutilized in city greening despite its significant environmental benefits.
Benefits of Narra Trees
The tree is known for its strong root system that helps hold soil, its water absorption capacity, and its great contribution to cooling the city's heat. It also provides shelter for animals while offering beautiful scenery, especially during its golden bloom every May.
Priority Planting Areas
Under the resolution, Narra planting will prioritize city-owned public spaces, including sidewalks along major roads and highways, road islands, parks, open areas, and other suitable locations in the city.
