Iloilo City Launches Digital Solid Waste Management System in 18 Barangays
Iloilo City Boosts Waste Management with Digital System

Iloilo City Government Enhances Barangay Waste Management with Digital Technology

The Iloilo City Government, under the leadership of Mayor Raisa Treñas, has significantly strengthened barangay solid waste management through the innovative Project Agubay. This comprehensive initiative, which stands for Awareness, Guidance, Unity, Biodiversity, Action, and Yield, aims to revolutionize how communities handle waste by integrating digital tools and community empowerment.

Digital Infrastructure for Real-Time Monitoring

To support the implementation of a digital Solid Waste Management Information System, the city has equipped 18 pilot barangays with advanced technological resources. Each of these barangays received tablets for digital monitoring, while every district was provided with computer sets, a printer, and a 75-inch monitoring television. Additionally, the construction of district cubicles has been undertaken to create dedicated spaces for system operations, ensuring efficient management and oversight.

This digital infrastructure enables barangays to report in real time, significantly improving waste segregation practices and enhancing collection and monitoring systems. By leveraging technology, the project fosters stronger community participation in maintaining a clean and sustainable urban environment, aligning with broader environmental goals.

Training and Community Empowerment

Beyond hardware distribution, the initiative includes comprehensive training programs for barangay officials and local stakeholders. These sessions are designed to equip participants with the skills needed to effectively operate the new digital system, empowering communities to actively monitor, manage, and enhance their solid waste management practices. This hands-on approach ensures that the technology is not only implemented but also sustainably utilized to drive long-term improvements.

Strategic Partnerships for Success

Project Agubay is implemented in partnership with Central Philippine University and Coca-Cola Foundation Philippines, combining academic expertise and corporate support to maximize impact. These collaborations bring valuable resources and knowledge to the table, helping to tailor the system to local needs and promote best practices in waste management across Iloilo City.

Overall, this initiative represents a forward-thinking step towards modernizing urban sustainability efforts, with potential benefits for public health, environmental conservation, and community engagement in the years to come.
