San Fernando City Government Ramps Up Enforcement of Smoke-Free Ordinance
The city government of San Fernando has significantly intensified its efforts to enforce the local ordinance prohibiting smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes or vapes in public areas. This crackdown is part of a broader initiative to promote public health and environmental safety within the community.
Surprise Inspections and Confiscations in Poblacion Area
Personnel from the City Public Order and Safety Coordinating Office (CPOSCO) recently conducted a surprise inspection and an information, education, and communication (IEC) campaign in the Poblacion area. This operation was a key component of implementing City Ordinance No. 2014-007, commonly known as the Smoke-Free Ordinance.
The inspection led to the confiscation of cigarettes and e-cigarettes that were either illegally sold or used in public places, directly violating the ordinance. The ban applies to various public spaces, including parks, schools, hospitals, government buildings and offices, as well as public transportation.
Penalties for Violators and Mayor's Warning
Individuals caught violating the ordinance face strict penalties, which may include fines of up to ₱2,500, along with potential community service or imprisonment. For establishments found in breach of the rules, the consequences are even more severe, with fines reaching up to ₱5,000 and imprisonment of up to one year.
Mayor Vilma Caluag has strongly urged the public to comply with the ordinance, emphasizing the harmful effects of smoking and vaping on both human health and the environment. She stated that the city government will continue to strengthen its crackdown against this vice and will not hesitate to apprehend those who disregard the law.
The intensified enforcement reflects the city's commitment to creating a healthier and safer environment for all residents and visitors, aligning with broader public health goals.
