DENR-Davao Establishes Six New Water Monitoring Stations in Tagbalaobao River
DENR-Davao Sets Up 6 New Water Sampling Stations in Davao de Oro

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Davao Region (DENR-Davao), operating through its Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-Davao), has taken a significant step toward bolstering environmental protection in Southern Mindanao. In a recent development, the agency has officially identified six new water sampling stations along the Tagbalaobao River in Davao de Oro, marking a proactive move for future water quality assessments.

Ocular Survey Conducted for Strategic Monitoring

On January 29, 2026, Engr. Liza Mae C. Villora, Chief of the Ambient Monitoring and Technical Services Section, led her team in conducting a thorough ocular survey along the Tagbalaobao River. This field inspection was specifically designed to pinpoint optimal locations for water sampling stations, resulting in the identification of the six new sites. These stations are now slated to serve as critical points for ongoing water quality monitoring, enabling systematic data collection and analysis.

Commitment to Environmental Stewardship and Community Welfare

In an official statement, DENR-EMB-Davao emphasized that this initiative highlights their unwavering commitment to safeguarding water resources, promoting environmental stewardship, and ensuring sustainable water use for the communities of Davao de Oro. The survey was conducted in close coordination with Punong Barangay Ronald S. Mabanag of Pindasan, whose local insights helped identify existing environmental and safety concerns within the watershed area.

Alignment with National Environmental Legislation

This ocular survey is firmly aligned with DENR's broader push for cleaner water, in compliance with Section 19 of Republic Act No. 9275, commonly known as the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004. Under this legislation, DENR, through the EMB, is mandated to classify all water bodies based on their beneficial uses, as outlined in DENR Administrative Order No. 2016-08.

The classification process involves a comprehensive ten-month water quality monitoring period. Following this monitoring phase, a public hearing will be convened to present the gathered results and data, ensuring transparency and fostering active community involvement in watershed preservation efforts.

The Critical Role of Water Sampling Stations

Water sampling stations play an indispensable role in maintaining public health, environmental safety, and regulatory compliance across the Philippines. Typically situated in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas, these stations facilitate the systematic collection and analysis of water quality data.

Regular monitoring of water bodies is essential for detecting harmful microorganisms, such as coliform bacteria, as well as toxic substances and heavy metals in rivers and beaches. This process determines whether these waters are safe for recreational activities like swimming and fishing.

Moreover, water sampling helps assess the overall health of aquatic ecosystems, identify pollution hotspots, and track the impacts of both natural and human-induced factors, including incidents like oil spills. By establishing these new stations, DENR-Davao is strengthening its capacity to protect vital water resources and support sustainable development in the region.
