The Philippine Coast Guard in the Bicol Region (PCG-5) has reported a significant maritime standstill, with thousands of travelers and vehicles stuck in ports across several provinces. This disruption is a direct result of the suspension of all sea travel enforced due to Tropical Storm Ada.
Stranded Passengers and Cargo
As of Sunday, the agency confirmed that a total of 6,231 passengers and 2,275 rolling cargoes, which include trucks, buses, and cars, remain stranded. The ports affected are spread across the provinces of Albay, Masbate, Camarines Sur, and Sorsogon. Furthermore, 44 vessels have sought shelter in these ports, awaiting the improvement of weather conditions before they can resume their voyages.
Coordinated Response and Safety Measures
PCG-5 Commander Commodore Ivan Roldan stated that their personnel are in close coordination with port authorities, local government units, and other concerned agencies. The primary focus is on continuous monitoring of the situation and providing necessary assistance to those affected by the travel halt.
Strict safety protocols are firmly in place. The Coast Guard has prohibited all vessels from sailing or conducting any riverine operations until weather conditions are officially declared safe. This preemptive measure is crucial to prevent maritime accidents during the storm.
Tropical Storm Ada's Latest Position
Based on the 11 a.m. weather bulletin on Sunday, the center of Tropical Storm Ada was estimated to be approximately 140 kilometers northeast of Virac, Catanduanes. This proximity to the Bicol Region is the main cause of the rough seas and adverse weather conditions prompting the travel suspension.
Commodore Roldan issued a strong appeal to the public, urging everyone to remain vigilant and follow official advisories from authorities. He emphasized the importance of avoiding any unnecessary sea and river travel while Tropical Storm Ada persists over the area. The public is advised to stay updated through official channels for any developments regarding the resumption of trips.
