The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has issued a forecast predicting significantly higher than usual rainfall for Central Visayas in December 2025. Key areas like Cebu and Bohol are expected to experience above-normal precipitation throughout the month.
La Niña Drives Increased Rainfall
Pagasa weather specialist Ana Dumdum explained that the region is projected to receive approximately 200 millimeters of rainfall for December. This figure is notably higher than the normal December average of 171.9 millimeters, representing an increase of more than 20 percent.
Dumdum directly linked this wetter outlook to a La Niña Advisory, which Pagasa issued in November 2025 after downgrading from a La Niña Alert. She detailed that warmer sea surface temperatures in parts of the tropical Pacific Ocean near the Philippines are enhancing cloud formation. "When waters near the country are warmer, cloud development becomes more active, resulting in higher chances of rainfall," Dumdum stated.
Multiple Weather Systems to Affect Region
The forecast indicates that several weather systems will converge to influence the region's climate throughout December. The primary contributor is expected to be the northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan, which may bring occasional to heavy rain.
Other systems that will add to the cumulative rainfall include:
- The easterlies
- Low pressure areas (LPAs)
- The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)
- Localized thunderstorms
Nationwide Weather Outlook for December 27
In its 4 a.m. weather advisory on Saturday, December 27, Pagasa provided a snapshot of conditions affecting the entire country. The shear line and the northeast monsoon are the dominant systems bringing rains to various parts.
The shear line is causing cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms over the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Marinduque, and Romblon. Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon may bring cloudy skies with rains over Quezon Province and partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
For the rest of the country, partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are expected due to the influence of the easterlies.
Precautions and Advisories
Pagasa has issued warnings for moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough seas over Northern Luzon. Moderate conditions are expected over the eastern sections of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and the Visayas.
Given the forecast for periods of heavy rainfall, residents in Central Visayas are strongly advised to stay vigilant. Authorities urge the public to consistently monitor official Pagasa weather bulletins for updates and potential warnings.
