Ada Intensifies, More Areas Under TCWS No. 1

The Philippine weather bureau has expanded its warnings as Tropical Depression Ada gains strength, with more provinces now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1. The system is expected to intensify into a tropical storm in the coming hours.

Latest Forecast and Movement

In its 5 a.m. advisory on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Ada has slightly intensified. It now packs maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near its center, with gustiness reaching up to 70 kph.

The cyclone was last located approximately 385 kilometers east-northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, or about 465 km east of Surigao City. It is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of 20 kph.

Areas Under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1

Residents in the following areas should prepare for strong winds associated with the cyclone:

Luzon: Sorsogon, and the southeastern portion of Albay (Rapu-Rapu, Manito, Legazpi City).

Visayas: Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, the eastern portion of Biliran, the eastern portion of Leyte, and the eastern portion of Southern Leyte.

Mindanao: Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.

Enhanced Monsoon and Rough Sea Conditions

PAGASA also warned that the combined effects of the northeast monsoon (amihan) and the outer circulation of Ada will bring strong to gale-force gusts to several other regions. These include Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, parts of Cagayan and Isabela, Aurora, Calabarzon, the Bicol Region, and Central Visayas, among others.

Rough to very rough seas are forecast for numerous coastal waters across the archipelago. Mariners operating small seacraft, including all motorized bancas, are strongly advised not to venture out to sea under these hazardous conditions.

Projected Path and Potential Impact

According to the weather bureau's forecast track, Ada is likely to pass close to Eastern Samar and Northern Samar between Friday and Saturday. Furthermore, the system is expected to make a close approach to Catanduanes province by Sunday.

The public, especially those living in areas under wind signals and in regions prone to landslides and floods, are urged to continue monitoring updates from PAGASA and follow instructions from local disaster authorities.
