Tropical Depression Ada Weakens, Amihan Brings Strong Gusts to Luzon
Ada Weakens to Tropical Depression, Amihan Brings Gusts

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that Tropical Cyclone Ada, known internationally as Nokaen, has weakened into a tropical depression. The state weather bureau issued this update in its 5:00 a.m. bulletin on Monday, January 19, 2026.

Current Strength and Location of Ada

As of the latest monitoring, Tropical Depression Ada was located approximately 380 kilometers east of Casiguran in Aurora province. The system is moving in a northeast direction at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour. It carries maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near its center, with gusts reaching up to 70 kph. Due to its reduced intensity, no tropical cyclone wind signals are currently raised anywhere in the Philippines.

Combined Impact with Amihan

While Ada itself may no longer warrant warning signals, PAGASA emphasized that its effects will combine with the prevailing northeast monsoon, locally known as amihan. This combination is expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts across several areas. The affected provinces and islands include:

  • Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Ilocos Norte, Abra, and Aurora in Northern and Central Luzon.
  • Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes in the Bicol Region.
  • Northern Samar in the Visayas.

Rough Seas Pose Danger to Mariners

The weather disturbance and the monsoon will also cause rough to very rough sea conditions. PAGASA has identified the following coastal waters where dangerous sailing conditions may prevail:

  • The seaboards of Isabela, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and northern Aurora.
  • The eastern seaboard of mainland Cagayan.
  • The northern and eastern seaboards of Polillo Islands.
  • The northern seaboards of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Catanduanes.
  • The western seaboard of Pangasinan and the eastern seaboard of Catanduanes.

In light of these conditions, mariners operating small seacrafts, including all types of motor bancas, are strongly advised against venturing out to sea. The rough seas pose significant risks to their safety.

Forecast Track and Further Weakening

Looking ahead, PAGASA forecasts that Tropical Depression Ada will continue to lose strength. The weather system is expected to further weaken and degenerate into a remnant low-pressure area by Wednesday, January 21. Residents in the affected areas, however, are still urged to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins as the combined effects of the monsoon and the depression's periphery may still cause disruptions.
