Tropical Depression Basyang Enters PAR, Poses Severe Threat to Visayas

A new environmental challenge has emerged as a low pressure area fully developed into a tropical cyclone upon entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), now named Basyang. This development raises urgent concerns, with many praying it does not mirror the bitter experience of Bagyong Tino from November 2025.

Lessons from Bagyong Tino's Devastation in Cebu

Not long ago, on November 4 of last year, Bagyong Tino left deep scars across Cebu. Due to continuous rainfall lasting two days, it resulted in severe flooding that damaged properties, vehicles, and tragically claimed human lives—from Talisay City in the south to Danao City in the north. At that time, despite offers of temporary shelter from major establishments like a mall in South Road Properties (SRP), many residents did not respond, relying on the belief that it would not bring severe flooding. However, nature is unpredictable and impartial. By November 5, many were caught off guard when floodwaters reached the second floors of homes in Talisay City, Liloan City, and barangays Talamban and Bacayan in Cebu City, leaving communities unprotected.

Pagasa Issues Warnings for Basyang's Approach

Currently, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Visayas Chief Weather Specialist Jhomer Eclarino has issued a stern warning. Basyang, presently a Tropical Depression, may intensify and potentially become a Tropical Storm before making landfall in Eastern Mindanao. Its projected path is expected to move towards the southern part of Central Visayas, directly affecting Cebu and neighboring provinces. The key lesson from Bagyong Tino is the importance of vigilance and proactive measures.

Urgent Call to Action for Cebuanos

As Basyang's center is anticipated to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall, with possible escalation to Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 or No. 2, Cebuanos are urged not to wait until floodwaters strike. Immediate action is essential:

  • Elevate household items such as appliances, beds, and living room sets.
  • Remember that these items, especially mattresses, take a long time to dry if soaked due to their thickness.
  • It is better to be prepared now than to regret later.

Additionally, it is crucial to heed warnings from Pagasa and local government units in affected areas. We must not allow the history of Bagyong Tino to repeat itself merely due to overconfidence. Stay alert and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.
