Cebu Braces for Cloudy Weekend with Potential Rainfall
Residents in Cebu are forecasted to experience predominantly cloudy conditions over the weekend, extending potentially into Monday, February 23, 2026. This weather outlook comes from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) - Visayas, as detailed in a recent update.
Shearline System Influences Weather Patterns
In a phone interview with SunStar Cebu on Saturday, February 21, Pagasa Visayas weather specialist Ana Dumdum explained that the current meteorological situation is driven by a shearline weather system. She clarified that rainfall is not continuous and varies across regions. Eastern Visayas may encounter heavy downpours due to the shearline, while other areas, including Central Visayas and Cebu, are likely to see only scattered showers.
Dumdum emphasized the need for vigilance, stating in Cebuano, "In our area, we should remain prepared and keep monitoring the weather, as there is possibly a higher chance of rain on Sunday." She attributed the occasional precipitation in Cebu and the broader region to the interaction between the amihan, or northeast monsoon, and the shearline.
Understanding Shearline Dynamics
In the Philippines, a shearline typically forms at the boundary between the cool, dry amihan and warm, moist winds originating from the southwest or the Pacific Ocean. This convergence creates atmospheric instability, which can lead to cloud development and rainfall, particularly along the shearline's path. Dumdum noted that this instability might trigger localized heavy rain in specific areas, though flooding is not expected, and no advisories had been issued as of Saturday afternoon.
Public Advisory and Future Outlook
Pagasa Visayas has urged residents to stay informed by monitoring weather updates regularly. The bureau also cautioned the public to remain alert for sudden meteorological shifts, as shearline systems can sometimes cause brief, intense rainfall in confined zones. Looking ahead, fair weather is anticipated to resume by Tuesday, February 24. Additionally, the weather bureau confirmed that no low-pressure areas are projected to impact the region in the upcoming week, offering some reassurance for clearer skies ahead.
