Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has made the decisive choice to cancel his scheduled official trip to Yokohama, Japan, prioritizing the safety of his constituents as Tropical Depression 'Verbena' threatens the city.
Prioritizing Cebu's Safety Over International Conference
The Mayor was set to depart on the evening of Monday, November 24, 2025, to participate as a speaker at the Smart Cities Conference in Yokohama. This international gathering brings together global leaders to discuss technological solutions, urban mobility, and climate resilience strategies. Archival emphasized that the event represented a valuable opportunity to gain insights to further his vision for a Sustainable, Smart, and Inclusive Cebu City.
However, following official recommendations from the Cebu City Disaster Council and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Mayor Archival decided his duty was to remain in Cebu. The worsening weather situation, driven by the approaching tropical depression, required his direct leadership and presence on the ground.
Leadership in a Time of Crisis
Explaining his decision, Mayor Archival stated that being with his community was non-negotiable. "At a time like this, I need to be here—to stand with our teams, monitor the situation closely, and ensure we are fully prepared for any possible impact on our communities," the mayor said. He reinforced his solidarity with the people of Cebu, adding, "We face this together. I am here with you, Cebu."
Call for Public Vigilance and Preparedness
With the city bracing for potential heavy rains and other impacts from Verbena, Mayor Archival has issued a clear call to action for all residents. He is urging the public to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Key advisories from the Mayor include:
- Staying updated through official weather warnings and government announcements.
- Preparing essential supplies, such as food, water, and emergency kits.
- Checking on family members and neighbors, especially the elderly and vulnerable.
By canceling his significant international commitment, Mayor Archival demonstrates a firm commitment to proactive disaster management and puts the welfare of Cebu City residents first as the community prepares for Tropical Depression Verbena.
