Tropical Storm Ada Maintains Strength, Triggers Signal No. 1

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Tropical Storm Ada, known internationally as Nokaen, has maintained its strength as of Friday morning, January 16, 2026. The storm continues to pose a significant threat to several regions across the archipelago.

Current Location and Strength

In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA stated the storm was located approximately 325 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. It is moving in a northward direction at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. Maximum sustained winds near the center are at 65 kph, with gusts reaching up to 80 kph.

Areas Under Wind Signal No. 1

The state weather bureau has kept Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 hoisted over a wide swath of the country. Residents in these areas should prepare for strong winds.

In Luzon, the signal is up over the eastern portion of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and parts of mainland Masbate, including Ticao and Burias Islands.

In the Visayas, the affected provinces are Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, and portions of Leyte and Southern Leyte.

In Mindanao, Dinagat Islands and Siargao - Bucas Grande Islands are under Signal No. 1.

Forecast Hazards and Warnings

PAGASA forecasts that Ada will bring heavy rainfall which may trigger floods or landslides in Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Dinagat Islands.

Rough to very rough seas are expected over several seaboards, including areas off Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Albay, Sorsogon, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Siargao, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Sur, Aurora, Quezon, Isabela, Cagayan, and the Babuyan Islands. Mariners operating small seacraft are strongly advised not to venture out to sea.

Furthermore, there is a minimal to moderate risk of storm surges with peak heights potentially reaching up to 2 meters in the next 48 hours. Low-lying coastal communities in Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and Dinagat Islands should take necessary precautions.
