Davao City Hall Centennial Stamp Unveiled to Mark 100 Years

Davao City Commemorates Century-Old City Hall with Special Centennial Stamp

The Davao City government has introduced a unique philatelic tribute to mark a significant milestone in its history. On March 1, 2026, City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte II officially unveiled the 100 Years Centennial Stamp during the Pasiugdang Pagsaulog event held at Rizal Park. This commemorative issue honors the centennial anniversary of the iconic Davao City Hall, a structure originally designed by the renowned architect Juan M. Arellano, in collaboration with Tomas Mapua and Antonio Toledo.

A Symbol of Heritage and Resilience

While stamps are typically small adhesive pieces used for postage, this centennial stamp carries profound symbolic weight. Oscar G. Casaysay, Head of the Office of Culture, Arts, and Heritage (OCAH), emphasized that these stamps serve as a powerful reminder of the City Hall's enduring legacy. He explained that the building represents more than just an architectural feat; it embodies a century of challenges, victories, and the unwavering spirit of the Dabawenyos.

Casaysay stated, "This will be a reminder to everyone that we have this institution, we have this heritage, which is the reason for what the city of Davao is today. So, these small items will always remind everyone of how we were before and how great we are now." He urged the youth to value this heritage and embrace the culture of discipline that defines the Dabawenyo identity, encouraging them to learn from history to shape a progressive future.

Official Authorization and Public Availability

The issuance of the centennial stamps was formalized through Ordinance No. 0182-26, which authorizes the city mayor to sign a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) for their printing and circulation. Casaysay confirmed that the stamps will soon be available to the public, offering citizens and collectors a tangible piece of Davao's rich history.

Restoration to Original Glory

In conjunction with the centennial celebrations, the exterior of the Davao City Hall has been repainted white, restoring it to its original color from when it was first constructed in 1926. This restoration effort underscores the city's commitment to preserving its architectural heritage while looking forward to continued growth and diversity.

Casaysay added, "Appreciate our traditions and learn from our history, our heritage, because this is our identity, Dabawenyos. You should learn from these things so that you will know more about yourself, our city, and where we are going in the future." He highlighted Davao City's reputation as a welcoming and diverse melting pot, fostering respect and progress for all.
