Batangas Congressman Acquires Historic German Home of Jose Rizal

In a significant move to honor Philippine history, Batangas 1st District Representative Leandro Legarda Leviste has announced the acquisition of the historic house in Wilhelmsfeld, Germany, where national hero Dr. Jose Rizal once resided. The purchase, revealed in a Facebook post on Sunday, March 15, 2026, underscores a personal commitment to preserving a key site in Filipino heritage.

Preserving a Literary Landmark

Leviste shared that Rizal completed portions of his seminal novel Noli Me Tangere in this house in February 1887. This work played a crucial role in awakening Filipino nationalism during the Spanish colonial era, making the property a symbol of cultural and historical importance. The congressman emphasized that the acquisition was suggested by his mother, Senator Loren Legarda, after the property owner reportedly initiated contact.

No government funds were utilized in the transaction, with Leviste stating that the goal is solely to preserve the site for future generations. The house, which has served as a residence for pastors since 1886, has been largely unused since the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for restoration and conservation efforts.

Plans for a Museum and Historical Context

Leviste plans to convert the property into a museum dedicated to Rizal's legacy, aiming to attract visitors and scholars interested in Philippine history. He noted that Rizal stayed in Wilhelmsfeld in 1886 while studying ophthalmology at the University of Heidelberg, upon the invitation of his friend Pastor Karl Ullmer. This period was pivotal in Rizal's intellectual development and his contributions to the Philippine independence movement.

The signing ceremony for the acquisition was attended by key figures, including Leviste and Dr. Franz Hack Ullmer, a descendant of Pastor Ullmer. Local officials and representatives of the Protestant church also participated, such as Wilhelmsfeld Mayor Dr. Tobias Dangel and Herbert Ehses, commander of the Knights of Rizal German chapter. This collaboration underscores the international interest in preserving Rizal's historical connections.

By acquiring this historic house, Leviste aims to foster greater awareness of Rizal's global impact and ensure that this piece of Filipino history remains accessible for educational and cultural purposes.
