Purple Haven Marks 2 Years of Protecting Women & Children in Davao del Sur
Purple Haven Celebrates 2 Years as Abuse Survivor Sanctuary

The Purple Haven, operating as the Women and Children Protection Unit (WCPU) at the Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital (DSPH), celebrated a significant milestone on November 27, 2025, marking its second anniversary of providing a safe refuge for survivors of abuse and violence.

A Sanctuary of Hope and Healing

For the past two years, Purple Haven has established itself as a vital symbol of hope in the community, offering a sanctuary where the most vulnerable members of society can break their silence. It has become a dedicated space where healing commences, where soft and trembling voices are finally heard, and where individuals with shattered spirits find the comfort and courage needed to rebuild their lives. More than just a medical facility, it is a haven built upon a foundation of profound compassion and bravery.

Strengthening Support Through Partnerships

A highlight of the anniversary event was the formal signing of Deeds of Donation between the Provincial Government of Davao del Sur, represented by Governor Yvonne Roña Cagas, and several key partner institutions. These organizations demonstrated their continued support by handing over essential items to bolster the unit's services.

The contributions included:

  • A portable speaker from the Goodlife Cares Foundation Inc.
  • A double-door refrigerator from the Brighston Foundation
  • A smart TV and toys from the Rotary Club of Digos

Additionally, the Child Protection Network Manila formally turned over the Annual Report for the year 2024.

Leadership and Gratitude

Governor Cagas attended the anniversary program and took the opportunity to commend Dr. Maryam P. Don, the head of the WCPU, for her unwavering dedication in sustaining the unit's critical services despite facing limited resources. "Thank you Purple Haven team for your continued commitment to protecting women and children in crisis," Governor Cagas stated during the event. The provincial government was instrumental in establishing the WCPU facility within the hospital's premises.

In response, Dr. Don expressed her profound gratitude to all stakeholders, with special mention to the provincial government, the provincial police office, and the child protection network, whom she identified as their major partners. "I also extend my thanks to our partner organizations like the LGUs, SPMC, DRMC, WCPDs, and the prosecutors office, for their active participation in the management of individual cases of our victim-survivors," Dr. Don said.

A Community-Wide Call to Action

Dr. Don concluded her message with a powerful call to action for the entire community and a message of hope for survivors. "To our community as a whole, may our fight against the abuse of our women and children start immediately right at the barangay level and even more within the heart of every home," she urged.

Addressing victims and witnesses directly, she affirmed, "The Purple Haven and our fellow advocates will continue to support you. You are not alone. Reach out to your family, neighbor, barangay, police, teacher, or whoever is closest to you right now. Your courage to speak even in a whisper will help us find you. You deserve freedom from violence and abuse. Help us help you."

As it steps into its third year, Purple Haven powerfully reaffirms its core mission to provide safety, comprehensive support, and enduring hope, ensuring that no survivor ever has to walk the path to healing alone.
