Five Iranian ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Monday after the United States lifted its naval blockade following the announcement of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for peace between Tehran and Washington, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.
Details of the Ships
The report said the ships included three oil tankers and two vessels carrying essential goods.
Background of the Blockade
The United States imposed a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz in April, preventing ships from traveling to and from Iranian ports. This was in response to Iran's tightening control over the waterway after a joint US-Israel attack on the country, which began on February 28 and lasted for 40 days.
Peace Agreement
Iran, the United States, and Pakistan announced early Monday the conclusion of the MoU to end the war after weeks of negotiations. The agreement is set to be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday.
US Response
Following the announcement, US President Donald Trump ordered the removal of the anti-Iran naval blockade.
Tasnim quoted information from a source saying on Monday that Iran is scheduled to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the signing of the MoU.
