PNP Chief Directs Heightened Security Measures in Mindanao to Combat Terrorism

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has issued directives for strict monitoring and intensified intelligence-gathering operations across Mindanao. This strategic move aims to effectively deter and disrupt terrorism-related recruitment and training activities that threaten regional stability.

Coordinated Security Efforts with Military and Intelligence Agencies

Nartatez emphasized that the PNP maintains constant coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the country's intelligence community. Regular surveillance operations are being conducted to preempt terrorist plans before they materialize into violent incidents.

"We treat all the information we receive seriously," Nartatez stated in a recent official communication. "While we have achieved significant progress in enhancing peace, order, and development in areas of Mindanao that were previously conflict zones, we remain vigilant in monitoring ground situations with support from our AFP counterparts."

Recent Security Incidents Prompt Increased Vigilance

The security directive comes following warnings from peace monitoring groups about alleged recruitment and training activities by the Dawlah Islamiyah (DI) organization in Lanao and Maguindanao provinces. These concerns escalated after a January 23 ambush in Munai, Lanao del Norte that resulted in the deaths of four soldiers.

Suspected members of the DI-Maute Group reportedly attacked government forces who were conducting non-combat security operations supporting community development initiatives. This incident has highlighted the persistent security challenges in the region despite ongoing peace efforts.

Presidential Directive Guides Security Operations

Nartatez confirmed that military and police personnel in Lanao and Maguindanao are maintaining heightened security postures in accordance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to adopt an uncompromising stance against internal security threats. The primary objective remains ensuring continuous stability throughout the Bangsamoro region.

"Strict monitoring and intervention measures have consistently been part of our operational protocol," Nartatez explained. "These approaches help preserve the national government's substantial achievements in advancing peace and development throughout Mindanao."

Community Involvement Recognized as Crucial Component

Drawing from his experience as former head of the Area Police Command-Western Mindanao, Nartatez highlighted the critical importance of community participation in maintaining peace and order. This community-oriented approach complements the technical intelligence operations being implemented across the region.

The comprehensive security strategy combines:

  • Enhanced intelligence collection and analysis
  • Close coordination between police and military units
  • Proactive monitoring of potential threat indicators
  • Community engagement initiatives
  • Rapid response capabilities to emerging situations

These measures represent a multifaceted approach to security that addresses both immediate threats and long-term stability concerns in Mindanao's complex security landscape.
