Several senators urged the Philippines to continue defending the 2016 Arbitral Award as the nation marked the 10th anniversary of the landmark ruling that invalidated China's nine-dash line claim in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Hontiveros Warns Against Disinformation
Senator Risa Hontiveros emphasized that the arbitral ruling remains a crucial foundation for the Philippines, especially amid China's persistent territorial assertions. She cited reports of Chinese academics claiming Batanes as part of China, which she said proves ongoing disinformation about Philippine territory. “China’s disinformation campaigns are exactly why the Arbitral Award matters, not only as a landmark ruling etched in the annals of history, but as a shield against those who systematically spread lies,” Hontiveros said.
Aquino Highlights Legal and Economic Stakes
Senator Bam Aquino affirmed the country's clear stance to defend its sovereignty, rights, and national interests in the West Philippine Sea. He noted that the 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration resulted from the use of diplomacy and international law under the administration of former President Benigno Aquino III. Aquino stressed that the West Philippine Sea issue is not only about territory but also about the livelihood of fishermen, maritime security, and the nation's future.
Pangilinan Calls for Support for Kalayaan Communities
Senator Francis Pangilinan encouraged Filipinos to show patriotism by supporting communities in the Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) and fishermen who continue to fish despite threats from Chinese vessels. Pangilinan shared his visit to Pag-asa Island in May, where he interviewed residents and fishermen who said they constantly fear going out to sea due to the presence of Chinese maritime militia. According to the senator, the Philippines' victory at The Hague must be matched with continued action to protect the livelihood and security of Filipinos in the West Philippine Sea.
On July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that China's expansive nine-dash line claim in the South China Sea, including areas within the West Philippine Sea, had no legal basis.
