Over 400 Philippine Gas Stations Shut Down as Middle East Conflict Triggers Oil Crisis

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Monday, March 23, 2026, that more than 400 gasoline stations across the country have closed their operations amid an escalating oil crisis stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This significant development highlights the widespread economic impact of geopolitical tensions on local fuel supplies.

Nationwide Closure Statistics Revealed

During a press conference, PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño disclosed that out of 14,313 gas stations recorded nationwide, 403 have ceased operations as of March 20, 2026. The closures are not evenly distributed, with regional data showing 64 stations closed in Cagayan Valley, 42 in Bicol, and 38 in Northern Mindanao. Notably, the National Capital Region (NCR) reported no closures, while Central Visayas recorded just one.

Investigation into Illegal Activities and Police Preparedness

Tuaño emphasized that the PNP is actively coordinating with the Department of Energy (DOE) to investigate whether these closures involve illegal schemes such as hoarding or profiteering. He revealed that two cases related to overpricing have already been filed in Samar in connection with the looming oil crisis. Additionally, PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered police units to conduct simulation exercises to prepare for potential incidents like massive looting and robberies that could arise from surging oil prices.

"What the PNP is doing is not to alarm our fellow citizens, but rather to take a proactive approach on how we will carry out our peace and order strategy in relation to the ongoing Middle East crisis," Tuaño stated. He explained that while the current economic situation is unlikely to trigger a spike in crimes, the police have implemented contingency measures to ensure public safety. These measures include intelligence-driven operations and scenario-based training for regional offices.

Broader Implications and Economic Concerns

The closures are linked to broader economic challenges, including potential layoffs of employees at affected gasoline stations. Tuaño noted that the PNP chief has instructed regional offices to simulate all possible scenarios to strengthen their response capabilities. This proactive strategy aims to mitigate risks associated with the oil crisis while maintaining peace and order across the Philippines. The situation underscores the interconnectedness of global conflicts and local economies, with the Middle East crisis directly impacting fuel availability and pricing in the region.
