Ambulance Driver Fatally Injured in Motorcycle Crash Involving Unlicensed Operator

A tragic motorcycle collision on the national highway in Barangay Tubigagmanok, Asturias, has resulted in the death of an ambulance driver. The incident occurred at 7:10 a.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026, when two motorcycles collided, leading to fatal consequences.

Victim and Circumstances of the Accident

The victim has been identified as Tomas Waskin Alibango, a 51-year-old married resident of Barangay Santa Lucia, Asturias, who worked as an ambulance driver for the city. He was riding his Honda Click motorcycle on his way to duty when the accident happened.

According to Police Executive Master Sergeant Yuri Colonia, the investigator from Asturias Police Station who spoke to Sunstar Superbalita Cebu, Alibango was following another motorcycle driven by Jhon Paulo Sanggutan Anog, an 18-year-old from Purok Osmeña 2, Barangay Old Bago, Asturias.

Anog made a sudden left turn to buy bread at a bakery, causing Alibango to collide with his motorcycle. The impact was severe, causing both riders to fall.

Injuries and Legal Details

Alibango sustained grave head and body injuries and was declared dead-on-arrival at Asturias Infirmary Clinic, where he was rushed after the crash. In contrast, Anog suffered minor injuries, as did his 2-year-old daughter, who was riding with him at the time.

Anog has been detained at Asturias Police Station. Investigation revealed that he was driving a Rusi motorcycle without a license and a helmet, and the motorcycle was unregistered. Despite this, the family of the deceased has expressed no interest in filing a case against Anog.

Colonia noted that the family feels pity for Anog, as he has young children and is unemployed. This decision adds a layer of compassion to the legal proceedings following the fatal incident.

Broader Implications and Community Impact

This accident highlights critical issues in road safety, particularly concerning unlicensed riders and the use of protective gear like helmets. The loss of an ambulance driver, a key community healthcare worker, underscores the personal and professional toll of such tragedies.

Authorities continue to investigate the full details of the collision, emphasizing the importance of adherence to traffic laws to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
