Cebu Province Initiates Rollout of 50 Electric Buses to Combat Energy Crisis

The Provincial Government of Cebu has officially commenced preparations for the initial rollout of 50 electric buses scheduled for July 2026. This strategic move is designed to address the ongoing energy crisis while simultaneously enhancing the transportation system throughout the entire province.

High-Level Meeting with Global Electric Transport

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro, alongside key provincial officials including Provincial Administrator Atty. Ace Durano, Executive Assistant V Elizar Sabinay Jr., and Provincial School Board focal person Christopher Baricuatro, recently convened with executives from Global Electric Transport (GET) Philippines. The meeting was led by GET Philippines President Freddie Tinga and focused on finalizing modernization plans aimed at reducing dependency on costly fuel prices.

Governor Baricuatro emphasized the collaborative nature of the initiative, stating, "The rollout has already begun; it is actually a program of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and this electric bus supplier, GET." Currently, seven e-buses are already operational in Cebu, serving as an augmentation to the existing transportation network.

Cooperative-Friendly Business Model

Under this ambitious program, transport cooperatives in Cebu will play a pivotal role through a specially designed business and financing model. This model is crafted to be "cooperative-friendly" and easily accessible for drivers and operators, ensuring smooth integration into the local economy.

Accelerated Technical Studies and Route Analysis

The Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) is now expediting the completion of technical studies and pushing forward with a Letter of Intent (LOI) to be submitted to the DOTr and DTI this week. Additionally, officials are meticulously examining commuter routes across various cities and municipalities, including connections to the tourist-frequented islands of Camotes and Bantayan.

Target for Full Implementation

The province has set a clear target to achieve full implementation of this electric bus system before September 2026. This timeline aims to completely transition Cebu towards a more sustainable mode of transportation, marking a significant step in environmental and economic resilience.
