Wing Van Plunges into Ravine in Oslob, Driver Survives Thanks to Tree
Cebu Wing Van Accident: Driver Survives Ravine Plunge

A potentially fatal accident was narrowly avoided in Cebu on Sunday afternoon when a heavily loaded delivery truck veered off the highway and plunged into a ravine. The quick intervention of another truck and a fortunate encounter with sturdy trees prevented a tragedy.

Miraculous Survival in Barangay Calumpang

The incident occurred at approximately 1:20 PM on Sunday, December 7, 2025, along the National Highway in Barangay Calumpang, Oslob, Cebu. According to the Oslob Municipal Police Station, the vehicle involved was a 10-wheeler wing van with plate number CAE6167, driven by Noel Banlaygas Donday.

The truck was transporting a cargo of assorted chicheria (snacks) weighing 1,500 kilograms. The driver initially sought help in Barangay Gawe, Oslob, after his vehicle reportedly became inoperable.

A Rescue Attempt Takes a Dangerous Turn

Another 10-wheeler truck with plate number GBD 5006, driven by Jhoy Rey Decipolo, responded to assist. This good Samaritan truck attempted to tow the disabled wing van to safety.

However, upon reaching the area of Barangay Calumpang, disaster struck. The steering mechanism of the wing van suddenly locked, causing the vehicle to lose control. It then careened off the road and into a deep ravine.

The driver's life was saved solely because the falling van became entangled in the branches of trees growing from the side of the ravine. This critical obstruction stopped the vehicle's full descent to the bottom.

Aftermath and Traffic Snarl

The dramatic incident caused significant disruption along the highway. A major traffic jam ensued as emergency responders and authorities worked at the scene. The focus shifted from a simple tow operation to a full rescue and recovery effort for the stranded vehicle.

Investigations by local police are ongoing to determine the precise mechanical failure that led to the steering lock and the subsequent plunge. The swift response of fellow driver Jhoy Rey Decipolo highlights the community spirit often seen in such roadside emergencies across the Philippines.
