Four Killed in Transcentral Highway Crash After Wing Van Loses Brakes
A devastating crash along the Transcentral Highway in Sitio Maaslom, Barangay Busay, Cebu City, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, has resulted in the deaths of four individuals. The incident occurred at approximately 3:06 p.m. when a wing van reportedly experienced brake failure, leading to a catastrophic collision with a motorcycle.
Details of the Fatal Accident
According to the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) investigation, the wing van, bearing plate number NFS-5991, was traveling downhill while the motorcycle was heading uphill. The van lost its brakes, causing it to go out of control and strike the motorcycle head-on. The impact was severe, dragging the motorcycle several meters before it came to rest against the side of the road.
Victims Identified and Casualties
Killed instantly at the scene were the motorcycle driver, Jose Gacayan, 26, a resident of Barangay Malubog, Cebu City, and his two passengers, Ereneya Lopez, 60, and Felex Vasquez, 50, both from Sitio Tugob, Barangay Babag 2. The van driver, who was trapped inside the vehicle after it crashed into the mountainside, was rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival. Authorities are still working to identify the van's crew members, with one crew member taken to the Cebu City Medical Center for medical treatment.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation
Lt. Col. Franco Rodulf Oriol, deputy director for administration and spokesperson of the Cebu City Police Office, confirmed that medical personnel from the City Government responded promptly to the scene. They provided immediate assistance and transported the victims to nearby hospitals. The TEU continues to investigate the crash to determine the exact cause and any contributing factors, such as vehicle maintenance issues or road conditions.
