Soaring Fuel Prices Drive Filipinos to Embrace Bicycles as Essential Transport
Fuel Price Surge Fuels Bicycle Adoption in the Philippines

Fuel Price Surge Sparks Bicycle Boom in the Philippines

Nearly every day, price boards at gasoline stations flash updates, signaling yet another increase in fuel costs. While some stations attempt to moderate hikes to ease the burden on motorists, the overall impact remains severe. Today, the budget for a full tank has nearly doubled compared to previous years, squeezing household finances across the nation.

Personal Stories Highlight the Financial Strain

I recall a fellow owner of an NMAX motorcycle, similar to my model. During the post-pandemic period, when fuel prices began to climb, he would spend around P350 for a full tank. Now, his expenses have skyrocketed to P675 to P750, depending on how empty his tank is. In my own experience, our family vehicle used to cost P800 for a full tank, lasting almost a week without air conditioning use.

My friend Jun Tagalog, from dyLA and the Associated Labor Unions, voiced his frustration on social media, noting that filling up his SUV now exceeds P5,000. These anecdotes underscore the growing economic pressure faced by everyday Filipinos.

Bicycles Emerge as a Practical Alternative

Amid the relentless rise in fuel prices, a quiet but significant trend has emerged: more people are turning to bicycles for their daily commutes. Although public transport fares have remained stable, basic goods have become more expensive. For instance, a dish that once cost P15 now sells for P20, and pork chop prices have increased from P60 to P70 per kilo due to rising meat costs.

Many individuals are opting to cycle to work, especially if they live nearby. This shift allows them to save on transportation expenses, but they cannot compromise on food, the essential fuel for their bodies. Bike shop owners have observed a noticeable uptick in sales, a natural response as bicycles offer a cheaper alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles.

Call for Enhanced Infrastructure Support

It is no longer sufficient to view bicycles merely as an alternative mode of transport; this is the time to actively support cyclists with adequate infrastructure. Key needs include protected bike lanes, secure bike racks and stations, and areas safe from theft, harsh weather, and other elements.

If we are serious about helping people and the environment, bicycles should not be seen just as transportation. They represent a robust solution to the ongoing fuel crisis and economic challenges, promoting sustainability and resilience in daily life.
