LTO Files Multiple Charges Against Reckless Driver on NAIA Expressway
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has initiated legal proceedings against a driver who was captured on video engaging in dangerously reckless behavior on the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Expressway (NAIAX). The agency is taking a firm stance following the viral circulation of footage showing the vehicle swerving across four lanes and nearly causing a serious collision.
Official Statement from LTO Chief
In an official statement released on Wednesday, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao emphasized the agency's unwavering commitment to public safety. "Road safety is our utmost priority. We will not tolerate any reckless driving that endangers the Filipino public," Lacanilao declared. He confirmed that a show cause order has been formally issued against both the driver and the registered owner of the Ford Everest involved in the incident.
Specific Charges and Immediate Penalties
The driver and vehicle owner are now confronting a series of potential charges, which include:
- Reckless Driving
- Signals on Starting, Stopping or Turning
- Disregarding Traffic Signs
- Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle
As an immediate administrative measure, the driver's license has been suspended for a period of 90 days. Additionally, the vehicle has been placed under alarm status, restricting its use until the conclusion of the LTO's comprehensive investigation.
Required Submission and Upcoming Hearing
The involved parties have been directed to submit a verified or sworn explanation along with supporting original documents. This submission must substantiate why they should not face administrative penalties or have their driving privileges revoked or suspended. "They are required to provide documented proof to justify why administrative actions should not be taken against them," Lacanilao elaborated.
Both the driver and owner have been summoned to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) in Quezon City. The hearing is scheduled for January 28, where further proceedings will determine the final outcome of the case.
Broader Appeal to Motorists
Lacanilao took the opportunity to issue a broader appeal to all road users. "We strongly encourage all motorists to adhere to traffic regulations diligently. This is essential for preventing accidents and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic across our road networks," he stated. The LTO's actions underscore its ongoing campaign to promote responsible driving behavior and enhance overall road safety standards throughout the Philippines.
