Two Women Killed in Mandaue City Accident Involving Brake Failure of Trailer Truck
A devastating traffic incident in Mandaue City has resulted in the deaths of two women, with another individual critically injured, after a trailer truck reversed unexpectedly due to a brake malfunction. The accident occurred on Saturday night, April 11, 2026, at approximately 10:40 PM along B. Suico Street in Barangay Tingub, highlighting severe safety concerns on local roads.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to initial investigations conducted by the Mandaue City Police Station, the Mitsubishi Fuso Tractor Head with plate number JAU 3942, towing a trailer registered as AUA 2377, was driven by Teodie Punay Ycot, a 36-year-old resident of Barangay Consolacion in Dalaguete. The truck had momentarily stopped while preparing to make a right turn uphill when its brakes suddenly failed, causing it to reverse uncontrollably.
At the time, several motorcycles were waiting behind the truck, attempting to pass. As the truck reversed abruptly, motorists scrambled to avoid collision, but two motorcycles on the right side were struck. One of these motorcycles became trapped underneath the truck, leading to fatal consequences for its passengers.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
The victims have been identified as Adeline Mediana, 34, a resident of Barangay Tingub, and Marilyn Cuambot, 37, from Sityo Sunflower, Housing, Barangay Canduman, both in Mandaue City. They were passengers on one of the motorcycles and were pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed by emergency rescue personnel to Eversley Hospital in Jagobiao.
In addition to the fatalities, Marvin Ocampo Dayuha, 38, the driver of the Mitsukoshi motorcycle, sustained critical injuries and is currently in a serious condition at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center. The accident also caused property damage, with the rear of the trailer crashing into a house owned by Edgardo Mercado de Guzman, 52, located alongside the road.
Legal Actions and Driver's Statement
The driver of the trailer truck, Teodie Punay Ycot, has been taken into custody by the Casuntingan Police Station. Authorities are preparing charges of Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Multiple Physical Injury and Damage to Property against him. In his statement, Ycot admitted that the truck's brakes malfunctioned suddenly, leading to the uncontrolled reversal that he was unable to prevent.
This incident underscores ongoing issues with vehicle maintenance and road safety in urban areas, prompting calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and regular inspections of commercial vehicles to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
