A tragic road accident in the City of Naga has claimed the life of a 34-year-old man after he jumped from a moving public utility vehicle.
Fatal Leap from Moving Vehicle
The incident occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in Barangay Colon. The victim has been identified by authorities as Junifer Traya Redongo, a resident of Barangay San Isidro in the neighboring town of San Fernando.
According to the City of Naga Police Station, Redongo was a passenger on a minibus traveling from San Fernando. Police reports indicate that the victim signaled for the driver to stop. However, before the vehicle could come to a complete halt at the roadside, Redongo suddenly jumped off while it was still in motion.
Victim Succumbs to Severe Injuries
The abrupt exit proved fatal. Redongo lost his balance upon landing, fell onto the road, and was tragically run over by the rear wheel of the very minibus he had been riding.
He was rushed to South General Hospital for emergency treatment but was declared dead on arrival at approximately 8:50 p.m. Medical authorities attributed his death to severe head and body injuries sustained in the accident.
Driver in Custody, Charges Prepared
The minibus driver, 44-year-old Alger Secretaria from Carcar City, is currently in police custody following the incident. As part of the standard investigation procedure, Secretaria has undergone a series of examinations, including:
- Medical examination
- Physical assessment
- Alcohol test
- Drug test
The Naga City police are now in the process of preparing to file formal charges against the driver. The case is being built around reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, a criminal charge applicable when a person's negligent act results in another's death.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of alighting from moving vehicles and underscores the critical importance of road safety for both passengers and drivers.
