Philippine Vehicle Sales Drop in January, EVs Rise

Philippine Automotive Market Sees January Sales Dip Amid EV Growth

New vehicle sales in the Philippines experienced a significant decline in January 2026, dropping by 26 percent compared to the previous month. According to data released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (Campi) and the Truck Manufacturers Association, a total of 35,053 units were sold during the month. This figure represents a sharp decrease from the 47,371 units recorded in December 2025, highlighting a notable shift in consumer purchasing patterns at the start of the year.

Electric Vehicle Sales Drive Market Transformation

Campi President Jose Maria Atienza attributed part of the overall sales decline to the growing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) among Filipino buyers. In January 2026, EV sales reached 2,610 units, marking a substantial increase of 63.1 percent compared to the same month in the previous year, when only 1,600 units were sold. This surge in electric vehicle adoption reflects changing consumer preferences and a gradual shift toward more sustainable transportation options in the country.

The rise in EV purchases is reshaping the automotive landscape, as traditional internal combustion engine vehicles face increased competition. Industry analysts suggest that factors such as government incentives, improved charging infrastructure, and greater model availability are contributing to this trend. Meanwhile, the broader sales downturn may also be influenced by economic factors, seasonal adjustments, and market saturation following year-end promotions in December.

This development underscores a pivotal moment for the Philippine automotive sector, where innovation and environmental consciousness are beginning to drive market dynamics. As electric vehicles gain traction, manufacturers and dealers are likely to adjust their strategies to cater to evolving demand, potentially leading to further disruptions in sales figures in the coming months.
