A cement delivery truck crashed into a center island on Cebu South Coastal Road early Thursday morning after its front tire suddenly exploded, causing massive traffic disruption during the morning commute.
Tire Explosion Leads to Loss of Control
The incident occurred around 5:00 AM on November 27, 2025, when the trailer truck experienced a sudden tire blowout while traveling along the busy coastal roadway. The driver, Pedro Lasmarias, a 43-year-old native of Carcar City, explained that he completely lost control of the vehicle following the explosion.
According to Lasmarias, the tire burst unexpectedly as they reached that section of the road. With no time to react properly, his only option was to direct the vehicle toward the center island to avoid more dangerous consequences. The impact was substantial enough to scatter numerous cement bags across the roadway.
Massive Cement Spill Creates Traffic Chaos
The force of the collision caused the truck's cargo of cement bags to spill onto the road, creating significant obstacles for morning commuters. Approximately 1,000 sacks of cement were being transported at the time of the accident, many of which ended up scattered across the traffic lanes.
The cement spill immediately created traffic congestion in the area, affecting thousands of motorists who use the Cebu South Coastal Road during their morning commute. Authorities worked to clear the scene while redirecting traffic around the affected area.
Experienced Driver's First Accident in 24 Years
In a surprising revelation, Lasmarias shared that this was his first accident in 24 years of professional driving. The experienced driver had maintained a perfect safety record throughout his career until Thursday's unexpected tire failure.
Fortunately, the accident resulted in no serious injuries. Both Lasmarias and his two helpers escaped unharmed from the incident. The truck was en route to deliver the cement bags to Barangay Mabolo in Cebu City, having originated from San Fernando City earlier that morning.
Local authorities are investigating whether the tire failure resulted from mechanical issues or road conditions. The incident serves as a reminder for commercial vehicle operators to conduct regular safety checks, particularly on heavily used routes like the Cebu South Coastal Road.
