Reaching the age of seventy is often seen as a biblical milestone, but for one vibrant Filipino senior, it's merely the starting point for decades of active and purposeful living. At 76, he continues to live a multi-functional life, free from a cane, blessed with good eyesight, and capable of walking several kilometers with ease. His story is a powerful testament to the possibilities of healthy aging in the Philippines.
The Pillars of a Purposeful Life After 70
This senior citizen attributes his vitality to a combination of divine grace and conscious living. Proper exercise, a careful diet, and consistent medical care are the foundational blocks that helped him move from a "strong seventy" into his eighties, which he considers "bonuses from Heaven." Beyond physical health, he stresses the critical importance of mental and social engagement.
He proudly enumerates his ongoing roles: he remains a consultant and adviser to several government agencies and private companies, packages business deals, and is an active officer or member in committed organizations like the Rotary Club of Angeles, the Pampanga Press Club, the Monday Club, and the Wednesday Club. His social calendar is full, with fellowship gatherings almost every night.
Combating the Real Enemy: Boredom and Solitude
His central advice to fellow seniors is to live with passion. "When you work, work hard. When you are having a good time, enjoy it to the max," he says. He warns against the true adversaries of a civilized society—not poverty, but boredom and solitude.
To fight this, he actively cultivates community. He is part of a group called the "Alfresco boys," composed mostly of seniors, who meet every morning from 5:00 AM to 8:00 AM. "You have to go out more often," he advises, highlighting the necessity of surrounding oneself with "real nice friends and not the toxic ones."
He reflects on the recent pandemic lockdowns, which forced many seniors into isolation. Despite access to books, television, and streaming services, the feeling of being imprisoned was pervasive. He quotes a poignant paragraph written by his classmate, Rod Cantiveros, which speaks to maintaining a high spirit, strong faith, firm hope, and solid love for fellowmen even during challenging times.
A Celebration of Life and Milestones
This philosophy of joyful living was recently celebrated in grand style. Sportsman Rodolfo 'Bong' Pineda marked his 76th birthday with a lavish event at the plush Royce Hotel and Casino on December 21. Hundreds of friends and family were treated to entertainment headlined by the iconic Mr. Pure Energy himself, Gary Valenciano.
The festivities extended beyond the party. The day before, a golf tournament attracted almost two thousand golfers. The event featured spectacular prizes, including cars and other highly coveted items, won by lucky participants in a raffle draw.
Ultimately, his message is one of gratitude and forward-looking hope. He continually prays to the Lord Almighty for more healthy years for himself and his loved ones, believing that health and happiness are what truly matter. His life stands as a powerful example that the later years can be filled with productivity, friendship, and celebration.
