The Shift from Cigarettes to Vaping: A Dangerous Trend
Many of my friends have recently switched their vice from smoking cigarettes to vaping. They claim that vaping is appealing because, aside from the pleasant-smelling smoke, they can vape indoors, in rooms, or anywhere air-conditioned, including inside vehicles. Additionally, they argue it saves money since a vape "bala" lasts longer compared to cigarettes, which they consume quickly.
No matter how much I try to explain that the effects of vaping are worse than smoking, they refuse to believe it, convinced they are doing the right thing. Even when told that vaping is "very addictive" compared to cigarettes and makes it hard to quit once started, they remain unmoved.
A Heartbreaking Loss: The High Cost of Vaping
Recently, it was with deep sorrow that I learned one of my friends had passed away. After spending over a month in the ICU, his family incurred massive expenses due to his illness, including ICU fees, doctor payments, medications, and even costs for caregivers, as his parents were also hospitalized. Due to his condition and the lack of family visits, his health ultimately gave up.
When a sibling arrived from abroad, they had to let go and only listen to stories from relatives. They obtained the medical records, revealing the situation while their sibling was still alive.
Medical Revelations: The Horrific Impact on Lungs
According to the X-ray report, the patient's lungs were unrecognizable, described as having darkened and constricted. Doctors suspected this was an effect of frequent vape use but couldn't confirm it since they had no one to ask while the patient was alive. Upon the sibling's arrival, it was discovered that the deceased had been a heavy and constant vaper, a habit of long standing.
As reported by those who saw the X-ray, the lungs resembled "gipakupsan nga tambok sa baboy" (congealed pork fat), utterly deformed and unidentifiable as human lungs. This illustrates how severe and horrifying the impact of vaping on human lungs can be, as stated by the doctor.
An Unheeded Warning: The Struggle to Convince a Friend
I shared this story with a friend who enjoys using vape. He listened, blinking his eyes, and after my tale, he joked that starting tomorrow, he would quit vaping, along with his long-unfinished "talidhay" (session). Despite his jest, I seriously advised him to stop using vape because I want him to live a longer, happier life. My friend just nodded and hasn't quit his vice to this day.
Well, he is responsible for his own body, and it's his money spent on his habit, so I've stopped advising him. In my mind, I've fulfilled my responsibility to him, and he must face the consequences of his life. This story is for those who wish to extend their healthy lives and avoid future significant expenses.
It would be good if those who continue to use vape would distance themselves or go outside, so they don't involve others in their terrifying smoke. Amen.
