DSWD-Davao Allocates P24.3 Million for Home for Girls and Women in 2025

The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Davao Region (DSWD-Davao) has announced a significant financial commitment, disbursing approximately P24.3 million in 2025 to bolster social services at the Home for Girls and Women. This funding has directly supported 131 clients and facilitated the rehabilitation of 53 beneficiaries, highlighting the agency's dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals in the community.

Comprehensive Support for Survivors of Abuse

Rose Ann Cordoves, a social worker at DSWD-Davao, detailed the initiative during the Kapehan sa Dabaw event held on Monday, March 2, 2026, at SM City Davao. She emphasized that the home specifically caters to children, women, and girls requiring special protection due to difficult circumstances, such as survivors of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. "We provide community-based protection for those in need, ensuring they receive the care and support necessary for recovery," Cordoves stated.

Currently, the facility is managing 78 active cases, with the majority involving survivors of gender-based violence, child abuse, and psychological or emotional abuse. This includes:

  • Children in conflict with the law
  • Survivors of exploitation and trafficking
  • Victims of forced prostitution and illegal recruitment

Services and Rehabilitation Programs

The Home for Girls and Women offers a range of essential services designed to aid in healing and reintegration. These include:

  1. Temporary shelter and protection for those escaping dangerous situations
  2. Comprehensive care and rehabilitation programs tailored to individual needs
  3. Support for restoring well-being and facilitating reintegration into families and communities

As a residential care facility, it focuses on promoting healing and recovery for women and children facing adversity, including abused women, victims of sexual abuse, women in detention, survivors of armed conflict, and special cases of sexually abused minors.

National Women’s Month Advocacy

In alignment with these efforts, Sherlyn Concubierta, the women focal person at DSWD-Davao, highlighted the office's plans for National Women’s Month. The celebration, which kicked off on Monday, March 2, 2026, will center on advocating for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Key events include:

  • Observation of International Women’s Day on March 6
  • An information drive on gender sensitivity and gender-based violence laws scheduled for March 18
  • A culmination program set for March 30 to wrap up the month-long initiatives

This integrated approach underscores DSWD-Davao's commitment to not only providing immediate aid but also fostering long-term societal change through education and advocacy.
