Ride-Hailing App Rider Apprehended for Mall Theft of High-Value Sports Items

A 32-year-old rider associated with a prominent ride-hailing application has been barred from resuming his travel duties after being caught in the act of stealing branded sports apparel and shoes from a shopping mall located in Barangay Mabolo. The incident, which occurred on April 4, 2026, has led to serious legal repercussions for the individual, who is identified by the alias Junjun and resides in Lapu-Lapu City.

Details of the Theft Incident

According to the ongoing investigation, Junjun was apprehended by mall security guards after they observed him concealing merchandise valued at P32,540 inside two eco-friendly bags. Instead of proceeding to the cashier to complete a legitimate purchase, the suspect attempted to exit the store while carrying the stolen goods. Initially, Junjun confessed that he was tempted by the branded items but lacked the financial means to pay for them. However, during further questioning, he altered his defense, claiming that he was merely following instructions from a passenger to acquire the products.

Criminal History and Legal Actions

Police authorities have revealed that this is not Junjun's first encounter with the law, as it represents the fifth instance where he has been detained on theft-related charges. He is now recognized as a notorious figure within these illegal activities. The management of the affected store has expressed a firm determination to file a formal case against the suspect to ensure he faces appropriate consequences and learns a lesson from this episode. Currently, Junjun is detained at the Mabolo Police Station and is confronting a theft charge, with legal proceedings underway to address his repeated offenses.
