In a heartfelt Christmas appeal, the head of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has called for national unity, highlighting it as the core of his festive message to the nation.
A Call to Heal Division
Archbishop Gilbert Garcera, serving as president of the CBCP, delivered a video message emphasizing the need for togetherness. He pointed out that the past several months have seen the country become fractured over various issues. "If we look at the past few months, we have become divided as a country. We have become divided," Garcera stated candidly.
He directly tied the celebration of Christmas to this plea for harmony. "This Christmas celebration, let us have unity and be one with God. Let us give thanks to God. This is my Christmas message: our unity," the Archbishop from Lipa added.
God's Presence as the Foundation for Unity
Archbishop Garcera reassured the faithful that praying for such unity is not a futile hope. He explained that the essence of Christmas is God closing the distance with humanity. "The heart of Christmas is: God no longer remains distant. He has come to unite us and restore our beautiful relationship with God," he said.
This divine proximity, according to the prelate, serves as the foundation and model for Filipinos to come together and mend their societal bonds.

Looking beyond the Christmas season, Archbishop Garcera also expressed optimism for the coming new year. He extended his well-wishes for 2026, hoping it brings better times for the Philippines. "Hopefully, next year, I wish you a Happy New Year. Let's be happy in the coming year," he concluded with a forward-looking sentiment.
