Former CBCP President Archbishop Villegas Urges Catholics to Observe Ash Wednesday Fasting
In a heartfelt video message, former Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) president Archbishop Socrates Villegas of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan has reminded the faithful of the importance of fasting on Ash Wednesday, which heralds the beginning of the Lenten season. This solemn day, along with Good Friday, is one of the two key dates during Lent when Catholics are mandated to fast, as emphasized by the archbishop in his address.
Spiritual Significance of Fasting
Archbishop Villegas highlighted that fasting involves abstaining from food to serve as a powerful reminder that only God can truly satisfy our deepest longings, thirst, and hunger. He explained that this practice offers a profound opportunity to experience the pangs of our human condition, thereby reinforcing the hope of heaven—a place free from suffering and evil. Through this act of self-denial, believers are encouraged to reflect on their spiritual journey and the eternal promises of their faith.
Call to Compassion and Sharing
Beyond personal sacrifice, the archbishop stressed that the true essence of Christian life lies not in mere suffering or sacrifice but in extending love, help, and compassion to others. He urged Catholics to share the food or blessings saved through fasting with their neighbors, transforming the act of fasting into a communal gesture of generosity. This, he noted, aligns with the core values of the Christian faith, fostering a spirit of empathy and solidarity during the Lenten period.
Archbishop Villegas's message serves as a timely reminder for the Catholic community to embrace Ash Wednesday with reverence and a focus on spiritual growth, while also promoting acts of kindness that enrich both individual and collective faith experiences.
