Thousands of Devotees Flock to Baclaran Church for Ash Wednesday Observance
Early in the morning, a massive crowd of devotees descended upon the National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, commonly known as Baclaran Church, this Wednesday to participate in the commemoration of Ash Wednesday. This significant event coincided with Baclaran Day, with activities commencing before 5:30 AM. A long queue formed outside the church as people awaited the traditional imposition of ashes on their foreheads—a ritual symbolizing repentance and a reminder of human mortality, echoing the biblical notion that "from dust you came and to dust you shall return."
A Day of Renewal and Devotion
For many Catholics, Ash Wednesday represents a fresh start and a return to God, setting the tone for the Lenten season. Among those in line was Amelia, an 82-year-old grandmother from Batangas, who shared her personal journey. She explained that this was her first visit back to Baclaran in some time, prompted by an invitation from her grandchildren and children. "I was just invited by my grandchildren and children... this is my first time returning because I recently recovered from a knee issue," Amelia stated. She emphasized the importance of this day, noting that she uses it to offer prayers for various health and family challenges she faces.
Preparing for the 40-Day Lenten Journey
Beyond attending Mass on Ash Wednesday, devotees are also preparing for the 40-day period of Lent, which involves prayer, fasting, and sacrifice. The Church encourages the faithful to observe fasting and abstain from meat consumption. According to Church guidelines, individuals are permitted one full meal and two smaller meals, provided they do not equate to another full meal. Despite the large crowds typical of Baclaran Day, the atmosphere inside the church remained serene and reverent, with each person engaging in a collective yet deeply personal spiritual journey.
Mass Schedules to Accommodate the Faithful
To manage the influx of worshippers, Quiapo Church implemented a series of consecutive Masses, starting from 5:30 AM and continuing until 12:15 PM. Additional Masses were scheduled from 1:30 PM to 8:15 PM. Church authorities anticipate that the surge of devotees will persist in the coming days as part of the solemn observance of Lent, reflecting the enduring significance of this religious tradition in the community.
