Middle East Airspace Restrictions Trigger Flight Cancellations at Mactan-Cebu International Airport

Due to precautionary airspace restrictions implemented in several parts of the Middle East, multiple flights at Mactan–Cebu International Airport (MCIA) have been canceled, resulting in significant disruptions to both arrival and departure schedules. The Mactan Cebu International Airport-Authority (MCIAA) issued a media statement on Sunday, March 1, 2026, confirming the cancellations of Qatar Airways flights bound for Doha, Qatar, and Emirates flights headed to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Airlines Notify Passengers Amid Operational Changes

According to the MCIAA, both airlines have already informed their passengers about these disruptions. It is anticipated that these cancellations will impact the overall flow of passengers at MCIA, affecting not only specific flights but also the general efficiency of airport operations. The airspace restrictions in the Middle East stem from escalating military tensions and attacks involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. In response, several countries, including Iran, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, and others, have either closed or limited their airspace for civilian flights to ensure security.

Travel Advisory and Coordination Efforts

In a separate advisory released on Saturday, February 28, the MCIA urged travelers to check their flight status, reconfirm bookings, and update contact details for real-time information before heading to the airport. This precaution is due to the possibility of additional flights experiencing delays, rerouting, or cancellations. The MCIA noted that Qatar Airways has temporarily suspended check-in for affected flights until further notice, while other carriers may also face operational changes.

MCIA continues to coordinate closely with affected airlines and aviation authorities to ensure safe and orderly operations. Further updates will be issued as necessary, as stated by the airport authority. The situation highlights the broader impact of geopolitical conflicts on global travel, underscoring the need for passengers to stay informed and prepared for potential disruptions.
