As a Filipino who has long resided in Texas since marrying my husband, I've often found solace in the quiet rhythms of home life. The fast-paced American lifestyle kept me busy with work, and I rarely ventured out, preferring the peace of tending to our garden surrounded by trees, where silence and cool breezes offered daily respite. However, in February, an unexpected opportunity arose—I returned to San Antonio after a prolonged absence, a journey sparked by a special family milestone.
A Proud Moment for the Family
Our trip had a heartfelt purpose: my daughter, Megan, was chosen as part of the Association of Texas Small School Bands All-State Band for 2026. This recognition is a significant honor, not just for her but for our entire family. While she represented her school alongside her band directors, I seized the chance to revisit my own cherished memories in the city.
Revisiting the Iconic River Walk
Once in San Antonio, I didn't hesitate to return to the San Antonio River Walk, one of the city's most famous and historic sites. Also known as Paseo del Río, its origins trace back to the Great Flood of 1921, which led to flood control planning and its transformation into a beautiful urban sanctuary. Today, the river flows gently for about 24 kilometers, meandering through downtown, lined with trees, lights, and soothing breezes.
Walking along the riverbank, I felt a wave of nostalgia—the glow of lanterns reflecting on the water, the aromas from diverse cafés and restaurants, and the soft sounds of passing boats. The River Walk is more than just a place; it's an experience that blends history, culture, and modern life in San Antonio.
Finding Joy in the Journey
Despite the hustle and bustle, there was a unique warmth and joy in the air. This trip served as a reminder that travel isn't solely about destinations but about the moments we cherish and remember. For me, it was a blend of pride in my daughter's achievement and a personal reconnection with a city that holds deep memories.
