Nearly One Million PUV Drivers Receive P5,000 Financial Aid
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has successfully provided P5,000 cash relief assistance to a total of 977,036 public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers across the nation. This initiative is a direct response to the ongoing surge in oil prices, which has been exacerbated by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Comprehensive Coverage of Beneficiaries
Eligible recipients include a diverse range of transport workers, such as tricycle and jeepney drivers, transport network vehicle services (TNVS) operators, delivery drivers, and motorcycle taxi riders. The aid aims to alleviate the financial strain caused by increased fuel costs, ensuring that these essential service providers can continue their operations without severe hardship.
Sufficient Funding and Future Plans
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian has assured the public that the agency possesses ample resources under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program, with approximately P60 billion in funds available. This financial backing enables the continuation of the aid distribution. Furthermore, the DSWD is already preparing for a potential second wave of cash assistance.
To enhance efficiency and streamline the process, the upcoming distribution is planned to utilize digital platforms like GCash and Maya. This move is expected to accelerate payouts and reduce logistical challenges associated with physical disbursements.
Target Deadlines and Health Precautions
The agency has set a goal to complete the first round of payouts before the end of April. In collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH) and local government units, the DSWD is arranging for medical teams to be stationed at payout sites. This precautionary measure addresses health concerns, particularly due to the extreme heat conditions currently affecting many areas.
Addressing Distribution Issues
While the program has seen significant success, the DSWD has acknowledged some issues that emerged during earlier payouts, including instances where eligible beneficiaries did not receive their assistance. The agency is actively refining its systems to ensure that all qualified individuals obtain the support they are entitled to.
Additional schedules will be released specifically for motorcycle taxi and delivery riders who have yet to collect their P5,000 aid. Drivers are advised to monitor the official social media pages of the DSWD and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for further updates and announcements.
