VP Sara Duterte Denies Plans to Seize Marcos' Position

Vice President Sara Duterte asserted on Friday, June 12, that she has no intention of seizing the position of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and remains focused on her sworn duties under the Constitution. Speaking to reporters in Davao City after a Independence Day activity, Duterte dismissed calls from some groups and retired military officials to lead a movement akin to People Power against the current administration.

Constitutional Succession

The Vice President emphasized that any change in the country's leadership must go through legal and constitutional processes. “I am the constitutional successor, I am the next in line according to our Constitution,” Duterte said. “And I took an oath when I assumed the office of the Vice President that I will preserve and defend the Constitution.”

“So, it is not in my hands to carry out extra-constitutional means to overthrow the current administration, and I do not want that either,” she added.

Denial of Power Grab

The Vice President also denied statements that she wants to seize power from President Marcos before the end of his term. “I do not want to grab the position of Bongbong Marcos,” she said. “I want the people to see until the end how shameless BBM is.”

According to reports from April 2026, some groups composed of former military officials have been encouraging support for possible political action against the administration, a matter that continues to be investigated and monitored.

Meanwhile, Duterte is expected to run in the 2028 elections.
